We often hear of the term anti-oxidants and free radicals. So what are they?
Free radicals:-
- Let look at free radicals which are actually the bad guy.
- Free radicals are hyperactive cells that want to bind to and react with any cell it comes in contact with. Once bound the free radical can damage the cell it is attached to. This damage can cause an immune response that wants to isolate and eliminate the damage. If the damage is in an artery, the immune system may attempt to surround and eliminate a section of the offending tissue, which can lead to swelling and possibly a blockage of that artery. So it is the effects from free radicals that can cause tissue damage which may lead to premature aging, heart disease, cancer, cataracts, parkinsons, arthritis and other diseases.
Anti-oxidants:
- On the other hand, anti-oxidants are the good guys which prevent free radicals from binding thus preventing damage from beginning.
- They are produced by the body or come from vitamins A,C, or E.
- When they circulate in the blood they become an easy target for free radicals and anti-oxidants provides a good binding site.
- This anti-oxidant, free radical bond hence prevents tissue damage because the potentially damaging free radical is tied up with the anti-oxidant forming a complex that can be eliminated from the body.
- Anti-oxidant therapy is therefore aim at getting free radicals bind with them and not with human tissues.
- A good anti-oxidant supplement can fill the bloodstream with more than enough free radical targets hence allowing the free radicals a harmless place to bind and be eliminated naturally.
