Earlier articles on sun therapy have mentioned the benefits from proper handling of sun exposure/bathing/therapy. Here, this article looks at how the following invisible ultraviolet(UV) rays affect us:

(1) UVA- that causes Ageing

  • UVA radiation penetrates deep into our skin and able to alter skin cell structures.
  • It is responsible for premature ageing of the skin, crumple porcelain smooth complexion and heighten the risk of skin cancer

(2) UVB- that causes burning

  • UVB is stronger and more damaging that UVA radiation.
  • It affects the outer layers of the skin, causing sunburns and damage to immune system on top of premature skin ageing and (possibly) skin cancer.
  • These rays are strongest between 10am and 4pm

(3) UVC- that is completely absorbed by the earth’s ozone layer

  • UVC radiation is extremely hazardous to the human skin. Fortunately, these ray are sheltered by the earth’s ozone layer

Experts have advocated some of the following methods to avert the harmful sun’s UV rays:

  • avoid prolonged exposure to the sun when the sun is all mightly and invincible between 10am and 4 pm0
  • wear long sleeves shirts, long pants, wrap-around sunglasses that provide 100% UV-ray protection, a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella
  • apply a “broad-spectrum” sunscreen lotion with minimum SPF 15 or higher about 30 minutes before going out under the sun. Reapply every two to three hours
  • supplement your diet with a well-balanced combination of antioxidants to neutralize excessive free radicals generated by UV radiation.

Many of us snore in our sleep without realizing it. But do you know that there are many reasons for snoring.

Append below some of the reasons that caused snoring:

  • obstructed nasal airways from swollen mucous membranes
  • poor muscle tone of the tongue and throat and
  • the nose and throat membranes become dry and swollen
  • being overweight and drinking too much alcoholic beverages, sleeping pills or anti-histamines before bedtime which cause dehydration that may result in snoring

One natural way to avert snoring is to try to sleep on your front or side with your head slightly raise. If possible, try not to fall asleep flat on your back.

Otherwise, there are medicated nasal sprays in the market that are formulated to help keep mucuous membrane of the nose and pharynx lubricated and moist. This hydrating action enables the membranes to stay out of contact with each other when air passes through.
